AI for ecommerce and DTC brands: where it earns its keep
For an established online brand, AI pays in five places: drafting customer service replies, writing and tidying product content, cleaning catalogue and stock data, building email content, and turning sales data into a weekly summary. Email stays draft-only, and every tool has a named owner. Online made up 28.8% of retail sales in Great Britain in August 2026 (ONS), so for many brands this is most of the business.
Where it helps
- Customer service. Drafts for "where's my order", returns and product questions, pulled from your order data and policies. Draft-only: a person sends.
- Product content. Descriptions, titles and alt text in your brand voice, written from your own product data, checked before publishing.
- Catalogue and stock data. Spotting missing attributes, duplicate listings and slow sellers, and flagging reorders for a person to approve.
- Email and content. First drafts of campaigns and flows from your calendar and product launches.
- Reporting. A plain-English weekly note on sales, returns and ad spend, so you see what changed without opening five dashboards.
Use what you already pay for
Your platform may already do some of this. Shopify's built-in assistant, Sidekick, can analyse data, manage orders, edit products and write product descriptions, and it "presents changes for your review before applying them" (Shopify Help Center). Start there, and pay for a build only where the platform's own tools stop.
What to keep a person on
- Anything sent to a customer, including refunds and complaints.
- Pricing and discount decisions.
- Supplier orders above an amount you set.
- Claims about products that carry legal weight, such as health, safety and materials.
For DTC brands specifically
DTC brands usually feel it first in the inbox and in content. Every launch means new product copy, new emails and a wave of pre-order questions. Those are repeating, rule-following jobs, and exactly where a checked AI draft saves the most hours.
How we work with online brands
We start with an audit of your own numbers, including sales, marketing spend, the inbox and stock, and build one workflow at a time in your own tools. For brands with shops as well as a website, see our guide for independent retailers. Niddy's AI Audit costs £1,495 fixed, takes five days with minimal client time, and carries a guarantee: ten times the fee in estimated annual value identified, or the fee back. Any email-connected AI we build is draft-only. Every other agent works within set limits, has a named owner on your side, and is reviewed and updated by us as part of our monthly support.

Questions we get asked
Which AI is best for ecommerce?
Start with the AI built into your platform, such as Shopify's Sidekick, and your email tool. Add a build only for the jobs those tools don't cover, usually customer service drafts and reporting across systems.
Can AI run my customer service?
It can draft most replies to routine questions from your order data and policies. We keep it draft-only, enforced at the mailbox permission, so a person approves every reply.
Is there AI in Shopify?
Yes. Sidekick is an AI assistant in the Shopify admin that can analyse data, manage orders, edit products and create content, and it shows changes for your review before applying them (Shopify).
How much does it cost?
Our AI Audit is £1,495 fixed and each workflow is £2,950. See our UK cost guide.
