AI for small business: where it pays, and is it worth it?

By James Moorcroft, founder of Niddy. Updated 12 October 2026.

For most UK small businesses, AI is worth it in two or three jobs that repeat every week, such as the inbox, quotes and orders, admin and routine content, with a person checking the output. It isn't worth it as a strategy on its own. Around 28% of UK businesses with fewer than 10 staff, and 35% of those with 10 or more, were using AI in June 2026 (ONS).

Where AI pays

Our own approach. Any email-connected AI we build is draft-only. Every other agent works within set limits, has a named owner on your side, and is reviewed and updated by us as part of our monthly support.
JobWhat AI doesWho checks
Customer emailsDrafts replies to the questions you answer every dayA person approves before it sends
Quotes and ordersReads enquiries and purchase orders, drafts quotes, keys ordersA person confirms each one
AdminSorts the inbox, chases suppliers, files documentsExceptions go to a person

A simple test: is it worth it for this job?

  • It repeats every week, in roughly the same shape.
  • It takes real hours, not ten minutes a month.
  • It follows rules you could explain to a new starter.
  • A mistake is cheap to catch, because a person checks before anything leaves the business.

If a job ticks all four, it's usually worth automating. To size it, multiply the hours by the cost of those hours: a job taking five hours a week at £20 an hour is about £5,200 a year (an illustrative sum, not a forecast).

Where it isn't worth it

One-off jobs, judgement calls about people or money, and anything built on messy data. Sometimes the best first step isn't AI at all. In one independent retailer's audit, the biggest finding was £20,000 to £35,000 a year of marketing spend to stop or redirect, before any AI went in (case study).

What it costs

Many useful tools cost little or nothing a month, and some are built into software you already pay for. The cost is usually in choosing the right jobs and setting them up properly. Our UK cost guide sets out what outside help costs, and our AI audit cost guide covers audits specifically.

Where to start

  1. List the jobs that eat the most hours each week.
  2. Run each one through the four-point test above.
  3. Start with one, with a person checking every output for the first month.
  4. Measure the hours before and after, then decide on the next.

Questions we get asked

Is AI worth it for a small business?

Yes, for jobs that repeat weekly, take real hours, follow rules and get checked by a person. Not as a strategy on its own, and not for one-off or judgement-heavy work.

How many UK small businesses use AI?

Around 28% of businesses with fewer than 10 staff and 35% of those with 10 or more, in June 2026 (ONS). A British Chambers of Commerce survey published in March 2026 put active adoption among SMEs at 54% (report).

Which AI is best for a small business?

Usually a general AI assistant on a business plan, plus the AI already built into the tools you pay for, such as your accounts, email and online shop. Choose by the job, not by the brand.

How much does AI cost for a small business?

Tools can cost little or nothing a month. Outside help varies widely; ours is £1,495 for an audit and £2,950 per workflow. See our cost guide.
