AI for UK manufacturers: start in the office, not on the plant floor

By James Moorcroft, founder of Niddy. Updated 12 October 2026.

For most small and mid-sized UK manufacturers, the quickest AI wins are in the office, not on the machines: triaging enquiries, drafting quotes, keying orders, chasing suppliers and turning ERP data into a plain-English weekly report. Manufacturing is one of the slower sectors to adopt AI, according to a British Chambers of Commerce survey published in March 2026, which leaves room to get ahead.

Where AI pays in a manufacturer's office

Our own approach. Any email-connected AI we build is draft-only. Every other agent works within set limits, has a named owner on your side, and is reviewed and updated by us as part of our monthly support.

What we don't do

Anything that installs, connects to or controls equipment on the plant floor: sensors, PLC or SCADA, MES installation, robotics, machine vision, or predictive maintenance from live machine data. That needs a systems integrator. We work with the data your systems already produce, read-only, and we'll tell you when you need someone else.

Funding

North East manufacturers can use Made Smarter Adoption, which offers free workshops, expert advice and match-funded grants for software. See our Made Smarter guide. Our audit includes a grant deliverables pack for businesses applying for funding.

How we work with manufacturers

Manufacturers are part of the retail and brand supply chain we work in, and we treat them the same way: an audit of your own numbers first, then one workflow at a time. Niddy's AI Audit costs £1,495 fixed, takes five days with minimal client time, and carries a guarantee: ten times the fee in estimated annual value identified, or the fee back.

Fixed fees, never revenue share. Full detail on our pricing page.

Questions we get asked

Which AI is best for the manufacturing industry?

For most small and mid-sized manufacturers, start with AI in the office tools you already use, then add workflows for quoting, order handling and reporting. Plant-floor AI is a separate project for a systems integrator.

Can AI read our ERP data?

Yes, read-only. We build plain-English reporting and anomaly flags over data your ERP or MES already produces, without changing those systems.

Is there funding for AI in manufacturing?

Made Smarter Adoption offers grants and expert advice for manufacturers in its regions. See our guide.

How much does it cost?

Our AI Audit is £1,495 fixed and each workflow is £2,950. See our UK cost guide.
