AI product descriptions: faster copy without the made-up claims

By James Moorcroft, founder of Niddy. Updated 12 October 2026.

AI writes good first drafts of product descriptions, titles and alt text from your product data and a few examples of your brand voice. The risk is invented detail, such as a material, size or safety claim that isn't true, so a person checks every claim before it goes live. Misleading product information can breach UK consumer law, and since 6 April 2025 the CMA can fine traders up to 10% of worldwide turnover (GOV.UK).

How to do it well

  1. Start from structured data. A spreadsheet of attributes for each product: materials, sizes, dimensions, care, origin.
  2. Give it your voice. Five or six of your best existing descriptions as examples.
  3. Set the rules. No claim that isn't in the data. A fixed length and structure. Your house words and banned words.
  4. Run it in batches. Spreadsheet in, spreadsheet out, ready to import into your shop.
  5. Check before publishing. A person checks every factual claim. Spot-check the tone on a sample.

What it must never invent

  • Materials, ingredients and composition.
  • Sizes, dimensions and fit.
  • Safety, health and age-suitability claims.
  • Origin, sustainability and "handmade" claims.
  • Reviews, ratings or awards.

Use what your platform already has

Shopify's built-in assistant, Sidekick, can create product descriptions and edit products, and it shows changes for your review before applying them (Shopify Help Center). For a handful of products, that may be all you need. For a whole catalogue, a batch workflow from your product spreadsheet is faster and easier to check.

How we help

We set up the batch workflow, the rules and the checking step, in your own tools, as one Sprint. For other ways AI helps online brands, see our ecommerce guide. After the audit, we build one workflow at a time in fixed-fee Sprints of £2,950 per workflow.

Fixed fees, never revenue share. Full detail on our pricing page.

Questions we get asked

Can I use AI to write product descriptions?

Yes, from your own product data and voice examples, with a person checking every factual claim before it goes live.

Is AI-written product copy legal?

Yes, but the same consumer law applies as to any product information: it must not mislead. The CMA can fine up to 10% of worldwide turnover (GOV.UK). That's why every claim gets checked.

What's the best AI product description generator?

Start with the tools built into your shop platform. For a whole catalogue, a batch workflow from your own spreadsheet gives more control over facts and tone.

How much does it cost?

Usually one Sprint, at £2,950 fixed. See our UK cost guide.
